THE VITERNA FAMILY

Because there were a number of Viternas living around Verdigre in the early years and yet today, here are some facts which may be of interest.

The Viternas are mainly from the capital city of Prague, Czechoslovakia. In the center of Prague is a street that is three blocks long. It is named after the Viternas and the Czech spelling of the name is VITEZNA. This street probably got its name because some of the Viterna women were ladies-in-waiting for the Bohemian Royalty. This information was found out by Marie Viterna Tikalsky, daughter of Jan and Anna Viterna.

The cemetery that is now known as Jelen Cemetery was often called the Viterna Family Cemetery. Many Viterna ancestors are buried there, the oldest known one being Christie Viterna who passed away on October 24, 1898.
