BRUCE AND DOROTHY [ADAMS] WALTON

Bruce is the eldest son of Cecil A. and Jennie (Bruce) Walton of the rural Verdigre-Venus and Neligh, Nebraska, areas. Grandparents were Willard and Belle (Adams) Walton of Center and Venus, Nebraska, and James and Effa (Sufficool) Bruce of Verdigre. Mr. Bruce carried mail by team and buggy from Verdigre to Walnut, Nebraska.

Bruce graduated from Creighton, Nebraska, in 1943 and now lives in Verdigre. He was a rural mail carrier out of Plainview and Pierce, Nebraska, but currently carries mail for route 2 out of Verdigre.

Dorothy is the youngest daughter of the late Perry O. and Frances (Stoltenberg) Adams of the Venus community. Her grandparents were J. W. Scott and Martha (Fee) Adams of Venus, Nebraska, and Hans and Fredericka (Dunker) Stoltenberg of Dodge, Nebraska. They had the first post office at Pleasant Valley in Dodge County, Nebraska, located in one room of their home and he was postmaster for several years.

Dorothy graduated from Creighton, Nebraska, in 1945 and is now employed at the Verdigre Housing Authority as Executive Director.

Bruce and Dorothy were married June 28, 1945, and farmed in the Venus and Winnetoon area. In 1956 they moved to Plainview, Nebraska, where he was employed by a concrete block company, and in 1957 they moved to Verdigre where he was employed by N & B Gas Company. He also had the Walton Insurance Company for several years.

They have four children: Ronald, Darrel, Dwight, and Virginia.

Ronald graduated from Verdigre High School, enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served one year in Vietnam. He married Penny Jerman and they now live on the Joe Jerman farm. Penny is employed at the Verdigre medical Clinic. They have three children: Todd is a freshman at Verdigre Public School; Paula, a sixth grader; and Janel is in kindergarten.

After graduating from Verdigre High School, Darrel enlisted in the army and served one year in Vietnam. He married Elizabeth (Kucera) and had the Walton Oil Company and worked as part-time clerk in the Verdigre Post Office. Then they moved to Wayne, Nebraska, where he is employed in the Wayne Post Office as a clerk-carrier. They have five children: Aaron, sixth grade; Rachel, second grade; Amanda, first grader; and twin daughters Ashley and Heather, four years old.

Dwight graduated from Verdigre High School and operated Dwight’s Service. He was also with the Verdigre Police Department, Verdigre Fire Department, and the rescue squad. He moved to Fullerton, Nebraska, where he was with the Nance County Sheriff’s Department as Deputy Sheriff. He was a member of the rescue squad, fire department, and Scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts. He recently married Joyce Ziemba and they have three children: Robert, Donald, and Candi. He is now employed at the Smith Body Shop as bookkeeper and dispatcher and is with investment Company in Omaha, Nebraska.

Virginia graduated from Verdigre High School and started working at the Norfolk Veterans’ Home as Assistant Director of Activities. She married Todd Grim, who is employed by Grothe Trucking Company, and they are now living in Norfolk, Nebraska. Their daughter Tiffany will start kindergarten this fall.

Bruce served on the Verdigre Village Board and was Mayor when Verdigre was named All-America City; he was on the Verdigre Fire Department, Scoutmaster, member of the Verdigre Improvement Club, Lions Club, and is now active in the Verdigre Development Corporation and the Nebraska Rural Carriers’ Association.

Dorothy was Den Mother of Cub Scouts and assistant leader of Brownies and Girl Scouts. She now belongs to order of Eastern Star, Verdigre Legion Auxiliary, Town and Country Club, Universe Club, and the Nebraska Rural Carriers’ Association Auxiliary.

They are members of the United Methodist Church of Verdigre, Nebraska.
