JOHN THOMAS AND MARY MARVILLA [HART] WOODS

John Thomas Woods was born February 18, 1851, at Chillicothe, Missouri, in Linn County. On November 5, 1874, he was united in marriage to Mary Marvilla Hart in the state of Missouri. She was born March 27, 1860, in Buchanan County, Iowa.

To this union ten children were born: William Francis in 1877, Hila Belle in 1878, Sara Elizabeth, born in 1880 and died in infancy, Elmer LeRoy in 1881, Charles Curtis in 1883, George Emory, 1885, Clarence Edward in 1887, and Dallas Addison in 1893. Three other children died in infancy.

In 1876 they moved from Missouri to Iowa where they spent ten years before they moved back to Missouri. In March of 1887 they arrived at Creighton, Nebraska, and located on a farm six miles north of Winnetoon. They resided in Knox County with the exception of a short time in Minnesota. In 1910 Mr. and Mrs. Woods moved to Winnetoon, retiring from farm life. In 1923, however, they moved back to their farm four miles west of Verdigre.

Mrs. Woods passed away August 27, 1926, at the age of 66. From then on John lived with his children. On January 16, 1941, he died at the home of his son Elmer LeRoy in Creighton. Ten days before, he had sustained a fractured hip in a fall. He died at the age of 89.

John and Mary’s family spent many of their years in the Verdigre, Knox County, area.
